[1] THIS WEEK'S MONEY SAVER: FREE Office Suites
------------------------------------------------------------

Let's face it, for most people the "Office" suite from
our friends in Redmond is gross overkill. Most of us
don't need another 93 ways to format a spreadsheet.

We'd be quite happy with word processing tools that don't
subject us to annoying animated menus or cartoon paperclips when we just want some help. And we don't look forward
to the "rental" fees that Microsoft will be charging us soon
rather than letting us own our software.

Ready for some FREE alternatives that can do everything
you need, take up less space on your hard drive, and
that can read and edit originals formatted in the MS
programs? Check out these two options:

StarOffice 5.2 by Sun Microsystems includes word
processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.
It also has support for AutoPilot Web page design
software, 3D graphics, diagrams, HTML editing, calendar,
newsgroup, browser, email and scheduler, photo editing,
and other applications. There are flavors for Windows,
Mac, and UNIX/Linux. You may find the desktop
integration unfamiliar at first. If so, there's a beta
version without it that may more closely resemble what
you're used to.

You can download the software for free, or order a CD
and documentation for a nominal fee here:

http://www.sun.com/staroffice/

Our second viable alternative is 602Pro PcSuite. Another
FREE Alternative to MS Office®, it's compatible with
both Word and Excel files. The suite is composed of four
full-featured applications: a word processor, spreadsheet,
graphics editor and digital photo organizer. The core
program can be downloaded at no cost. There are also a
number of upgrade modules that one can purchase for a
fee. You can find them all here:

[2] THIS WEEK'S COMPUTING TIP: Split Files
------------------------------------------------------------

Last week I mentioned that you might need to split large
email attachments sent to people who use AOL. There are
other web providers who also set size limits for attached
files, requiring you to find a way to break them up while
retaining their integrity and usability.

You may also need to split files when saving them to
floppies or other media when your file is too big for a
single disk.

Here's a great free program that will take care of all
this for you: Topsplit.

Topsplit quickly and easily divides large files into
several small ones. Topsplit doesn't use a sequential
approach, filling one floppy at a time. The problem with
the sequential approach is that a single error (for
example, one bad cluster on any floppy) can force you
to go back to the first floppy disk and start copying
all over again. In Topsplit, if there's a disk error,
you re-do just that one disk, not the whole job.

You can get Topsplit here:

[3] THIS WEEK'S INTERNET TIP: Find A Doctor
------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a web site where the name just about says it all:
DoctorDirectory.com. It consists of an easy-to-use
database with which you can search for doctors by location
or by specialty. Once you find a doctor in a location
that's convenient for you, there's also a link to a map
and directions to their office.

There are also links for finding hospitals, calculating
your longevity, and researching health and nutrition.
Find out if there's a doctor in the house here:
