[1] THIS WEEK'S MONEY SAVER: Find Bargain Equipment
------------------------------------------------------------

This week I'm going to let you in on one of my favorite
moneysaving techniques, and one that has consistently
kept some nice dough in my pocket.

As long as you don't need the latest bells and whistles,
you can save a bundle on computer equipment by simply
passing up the latest technology in favor of "obsolete"
or "manufacturer overstock" items.

More than 25 years ago, in 1965, when Intel was developing
the first microprocessors, company co-founder Gordon Moore
predicted that the number of transistors on a
microprocessor would double approximately every 18 months.

So far, this prediction, known as Moore's law, has proven
remarkably accurate. What it means for us is that
computers and peripherals have an 18-month generational
life cycle before their manufacturers consider them
obsolete.

When the new generation of equipment comes on the market,
all the unsold "old" generation suddenly turns into
bargains for us, if we know where to find them.

Here are two of my favorite places for finding extreme
bargains:

The first is a discounter of discontinued merchandise,
Computer Geeks:

http://www.compgeeks.com/

To give you an example of what's possible, the Geeks
currently offer several computer systems in the 700Mhz
range for a little over $200.

If I can't find what I'm looking for at the Geeks, I'll
do a search at Price Watch® where I can find the
lowest available price on just about everything. One
word of caution, the Price Watch® site has been
designed so simply that its lack of frills can be
confusing. It's basically a collection of interactive
menus. It may take you a minute or two to get oriented,
but I think you'll find that it's worth it.

      If you purchase merchandise
      over the internet, here's a
      fee you should avoid paying.

[2] THIS WEEK'S COMPUTING TIP: Keep Your Clips
------------------------------------------------------------

One of the biggest shortcomings of Windows is that the
clipboard only holds one item at a time. If you're a
power user, or even if you do a lot of word processing,
you've probably felt limited by the inability to retain
several snippets for copying and pasting during a working
session rather than just one.

Both of the FREE programs I'm about to mention solve that
problem by allowing you to archive hundreds of bits of frequently used information for instant retrieval.

The first, Clipboard Magic, is the one I've used the
longest. It's simple, fast and unobtrusive. It will
store a single character or several pages of text. You
can store as many items as you want and restore them
one-at-a-time to the clipboard with a single mouse
click, or just drag them to your document. You can also
edit your stored clips, sort them, and add to them
manually.

You can get Clipboard Magic here:

http://www.cyber-matrix.com/clipmag.htm

The second program in this problem-solving series is
called Yankee Clipper. In addition to doing most of the
things that Clipboard Magic can do, Yankee Clipper can
also save bitmap and metafile images and URLs and RTF
text in their native formats. In fact, it can save up
to 200 items. And it's got a great boilerplate feature
in case you produce documents that have frequently
repeated sections.

Yankee Clipper, while FREE, is "Make_my_day_ware."
Be sure to read the authors' explanation of what that
is.

You can get Yankee Clipper here:

http://www.yankee-clipper.net/

If you do any significant amount of copying and pasting,
you'll definitely want to have at least one of these programs
at your command. Both run on Windows 95, 98, 2000
and NT.

[3] THIS WEEK'S INTERNET TIP: Be A Media Mogul
------------------------------------------------------------

Hey, Rupert, ever wanted to be a media mogul with your
own radio station? Shoutclub can make you an overnight
sensation or a media baron in your own mind. Create an
account at this techno-dweeb site and learn how to do
your own web broadcasts.

Their forums are great for learning the ropes, and the
stations they already list can help you generate ideas
for content. If you're not all that ambitious, just
sign up to be a listener. But if you've always dreamed
of being a recording artist, you'll soon be able to
list your music here for all the world to hear.

Just wanna learn about available webcast players?
They've got great reviews of Sonique, Ultraplayer and
Winamp.
