[1] THIS WEEK'S MONEY SAVER: Free Up Memory

PC Sluggish? Free Up Some Memory

If you're using a PC compatible computer, you may have
noticed that your system seems to get sluggish after using
it for a while. This condition is especially noticeable when
using a browser to surf the internet.

This is a problem with Windows-based systems because
Windows swaps memory in a way that can cause memory
to become tied up and unusable until a reboot. Purchasing
additional memory can help. Sixty-four megabytes is a
good amount for Windows 95 and up. If you don't have
that much memory, or you don't wish to spend more
money on memory, here's a free software alternative:

A utility called FreeMem lets you easily free up the
memory that your PC needs to run efficiently. Among
other things, FreeMem lets you free up any amount of
RAM (Random Access Memory, the memory that
"leaks" in Windows) with a simple mouse click. The
commercial "Professional" version adds a couple of
extra features.

Another such utility (but not free) is MemTurbo, which
can be found at

[2] THIS WEEK'S COMPUTING TIP: Copy And
Move Files
-----------------------------------------------------------

Easily Copy and Move Files

Last week I showed you the keyboard shortcuts for Cut
(Ctrl+X), Copy (Ctrl+C), and Paste (Ctrl+V). That's
shorthand for "hold down the "control" key (located
under your "shift" key) and the letter "X" if you want to
cut; the letter "C" if you want to copy; or the letter "V" if
you want to paste."

I mentioned that these shortcuts work not just for text
but also for files. Say for example, you want to copy a
file from your hard drive and paste it to a floppy, or vice
versa.

You don't need to open two Explorer windows to copy
or move files from one folder to another, just use these
keyboard shortcuts. Select the files or folders you wish
to copy or move, then copy or cut them. They will then
be temporarily stored on the Windows Clipboard.

Navigate to the destination folder and then paste. When
in the middle of this operation, don't cut or copy anything
else until you've confirmed that the moved files are where
you want them, or they'll be lost in cyberspace. (Because
Windows Clipboard can only hold one thing at a time.)

[3] THIS WEEK'S INTERNET TIP: Finding Folks
-----------------------------------------------------------

Finding Other People

The Netscape browser is set up to make finding people
relatively easy. (If you don't have Netscape, you can get
it for free at http://www.netscape.net. You can have more
than one browser on your computer to take advantage of
the different features they offer.)

Go to the Communicator menu, click Guide, and select
People. This brings you to the Netscape People Finder
page, which combines many online yellow page sources
in one place. Enter the information about the person you
want to find (name, address, e-mail address), then click
Search. Netscape goes looking and, with luck, returns
the information you want.

If you only know a phone number or address, but don't
know the identity of the person who owns it, you can use
the Netscape People Finder page to reverse search for
the person. Open the Netscape People Finder page, then
click the Reverse Lookup link. Enter your information,
then click Search to go looking.

Rather not bother with Netscape? Here's a great search
resource available to any browser, The Ultimate White
Pages:

http://www.theultimates.com/white/

Here you can do phone number lookups, reverse phone
number searches (when you have a number but no
name), and map searches.

[5] From our Readers:

Reader Connie S. asks what can be done about Spam,
or unsolicited e-mail.

Here's what may be the ultimate solution:

http://www.msgto.com/

The first time a user sends a message to you, this service
will intercept it and ask the sender to verify his or her
intentions one time. Only after a response from a human
being will the message be delivered to your Inbox. Since
most unsolicited e-mail originates with automated
programs, MsgTo should make spam a thing of the past
for you.
