[1] THIS WEEK'S MONEY SAVER: Safer On-line Shopping
------------------------------------------------------------
Human nature being what it is, there are just as many
unscrupulous people on the internet looking for a quick
buck at your expense as there are in the real world.
If you have a healthy level of skepticism about what you
read on the net, and you'd like to check out a business
before you give them your hard-earned money, you'll want
to use the Better Business
Bureau's web site as a
starting point.
The BBB can provide you with on-line buying tips, warnings
and alerts, and information on many scams that they'll
help you avoid.
Here's where you can
find it.

[2] THIS WEEK'S COMPUTING TIP: Dirty Little Worm
------------------------------------------------------------
The network worm "SirCam," a type of computer virus, has
broken records for spreading from one unsuspecting user to
many others. First detected on July 18, 2001, "SirCam" has
already spread throughout the world and has seized first
place among the most wide-spreading malicious programs.
"SirCam" uses the same means for spreading and penetrating
a computer as the infamous "Loveletter" and "Melissa"
worms. "SirCam" spreads as a file attached to an e-mail.
The file doesn't have a consistent name, extension or
message text. It creates fake emails and sends them to
all other email addresses found on the infected PC.
This ability to steal information from host machines and
to change appearance has fooled many users into believing
in a received files authenticity and safety. Without
suspecting foul play, users open these files and infect
their own systems.
"SirCam" has other dangerous side effects: It takes
up free space on your hard drive and often deletes all
files and subdirectories from the Windows directory.
You may be able to recognize a "SirCam" message because
it will contain the first line, "Hi! How are you?" And
the last line: "See you later. Thanks." However, as long
as you don't open the attached file, and you use an
anti-virus program to disinfect your computer, you
should be safe.
Several vendors are making free detection and deletion
utilities available. Among them, Symantec.
And Kaspersky.
But here's a defensive strategy that can keep you secure
from other malicious code that is sure to come along:
Delete any email that contains an attachment unless you
have gotten confirmation from the sender that it is safe.
It doesn't matter whether or not the attachment is from
a known and trusted source. If you are not expecting it,
and you didn't ask for it, don't open it. (I've already
received "SirCam" three times, once from a person known
to me, and twice from people that I do not know.)
Tip-Within-A-Tip
Last week I told you I'd help you enlarge your caption
buttons (the little boxes in the upper right corner of
your windows) so that they're easier to manipulate when
you want to minimize, maximize or close windows.
Here's how to do it: Right-click an empty area on your
desktop, select "Properties," from the pop-up menu and
click the "Appearance" tab. In the dropdown list under
"Item," scroll through the choices and select "Caption
Buttons." Now just click the up arrow next to "Size."
You can watch the preview to see the changes until you
reach a size that you like. Click "OK" and the change
will be applied to your desktop.
While you're there, you may wish to experiment with
changes in some of the other customizable Windows
features.

[5] Why Most Businesses Fail
------------------------------------------------------------
Most businesses fail not because of insufficient funding
or even because of negative cash flow. Most businesses
fail because the people who try to start them simply don't
know what it takes to succeed in business.
In business, as in life, the truth can set you free.
