[2] THIS WEEK'S COMPUTING TIP: Digital Sticky Notes

Still using bits of paper and yellow sticky notes to keep
track of the things you need to do?

Here's a way to put your computer to use and keep those
important daily tasks more manageable: Set aside a portion
of your monitor's desktop where you can put digital
reminder notes. (What you'll actually be doing is creating
shortcuts with names that relate to real-world tasks.)

Right click anywhere on some empty desktop territory and
hit "New" in the menu that pops up. You can select any
given file type. (We're just going to use them for reminders,
remember?) An icon will appear with the name "New [file of
the type that you selected]." Hit F2, and rename it to
something that will actually remind you of the task you
intend to complete. The reminder icon will remain on your
desktop until you complete the task to which it refers
and/or until you delete it.

Freewarejava.com is a web site with links to hundreds of
free java applets and scripts which you can use to liven up
your web site.

Some of the scripts that I thought were particularly
useful were a password protection script to keep portions
of your web site off-limits to those without the code, and
scripts for creating on-line communities and chat areas.
