I guess I keep revisiting this topic because I'm a
penny-pincher at heart.

While there are still a few providers of free PC-to-Phone
service, many of them have disappeared recently with the
tech shakeout. By the time you visit any of their links,
their terms of service may have changed, or they may have
gone belly-up

[2] THIS WEEK'S COMPUTING TIP: Speed Up Your System

If your PC has been getting sluggish lately, it may be
due to software programs that have invited themselves
into your "StartUp" menu - and you may not need or want
them there. Symptoms include slow booting at power-up,
because more programs are loading, and noticeably delayed
operation once you are up and running.

Win98 includes a utility that will show you what programs
are running. You can then eliminate from your startup
sequence the ones you don't want to start unless YOU call
for them.

To do this, click on the "Start" button. Select "RUN"
and then type "msconfig" (without the quotes) in the
little white rectangle (known as the command line).

You'll see a series of tabs across the top of the box
which opens. The last tab on the right is "Startup."
Click it and you'll see a checklist. If you recognize
any programs that you know you don't need at startup
(such as RealAudio or a program you know you don't use
very often), simply uncheck their boxes.

WARNING: If you DON'T know what a program is, DON'T
uncheck it. Only uncheck the entries about which you
are certain.
