[1] THIS WEEK'S MONEY SAVER: Do You Need High-Octane Gas?
--------------------------------------------------------

This week's money saver is based on Les Jackson's "Smart
Consumer" column in the January-February issue of Modern
Maturity, the magazine of the American Association of
Retired Persons.

If you believe that using high-octane, premium, or ethyl
gasoline makes your car run better, smoother or more
powerfully, you may not only be wasting your money, you
may also be harming your vehicle.

Fact is, high-test gas can be bad for your car. While
high-octane implies that more energy is available, it
actually produces no more energy than regular. Higher
octane fuel has a higher burning temperature and it
requires higher compression to burn efficiently. Only
about five percent of vehicles sold have high-compression
engines that require premium gas.

Using high test in a normal engine results in incomplete
combustion, less power, carbon-fouling of the cylinders
and most important, wasted money.

High-test gas is more profitable, though, and that's why
you seldom - if ever - see ads for regular gas. You may
want to check your owner's manual before you buy
premium again!

[2] THIS WEEK'S COMPUTING TIP: Write Internationally
----------------------------------------------------------

If you're in the habit of writing to friends in countries
where English is not the main language, and you'd like to
include the little marks that go over or under the letters,
(like ~ over n's, umlauts over u's, grave or acute accents
in French, and so on) Windows lets you do that.

Double click on "Keyboard" in the Control Panel, and
click on the "Language" tab, then click the middle button
marked "Properties" for "English (United States)."

A scrolling "Language Properties" menu will be displayed.
Change the highlighted choice from "United States 101" to
"United States - International."

Now, you won't need to remember the codes for such things
as an accented lowercase "e." You can type an apostrophe
first and then the letter. Windows will fix it for you.
"~n" will become an "n" with a tilde over it. "u" will
be a "u" with an umlaut. There are also a number of
special key sequences for other type effects.

[5] A Personal Recommendation: Just For You If You're New
----------------------------------------------------------

Are you new to computing and you'd like to know how to
make your PC do exactly what you want it to do? To stop it
acting like it has a mind of its own, and to have it just
let you get some things done for a change?

How would you like to use the internet without fear of
getting lost and confused? To confidently send e-mail in
a flash, and even to build your own family or business
web pages?

And wouldn't you just love to be able to use those
super-duper programs without painfully struggling through
complicated help files, false starts and dead ends,
before giving up in frustration?

Now you really can. At last the mysteries of your PC and
the internet are explained for you and the magic is
revealed -- in plain English!

If you're ready to simplify your computing life, and
actually do the things you want to do with your computer
