[1] THIS WEEK'S MONEY SAVER: Oil Change - How Often?
--------------------------------------------------------

This tip is from Les Jackson's "Smart Consumer" column in
the January-February issue of Modern Maturity, the magazine
of the American Association of Retired Persons.

Jackson says the belief that one should change their
oil every 3,000 miles is a result of the quick-lube
industry's advertising. Check your owner's manual. If
your car was built since the mid-1960's you'll see that
the manufacturer probably recommends oil changes every
6,000 to 10,000 miles.

Here's a recommendation from me, though. If you're going
to schedule your oil changes for longer intervals, make
sure the service people check such critical parts as
hoses, belts and connectors when they change your oil.

This way you may avoid some expensive repairs that can
be averted by inexpensive inspection.

[2] THIS WEEK'S COMPUTING TIP: Fast Internet Searches
----------------------------------------------------------

If you're using a relatively new browser (IE 5.x or
Netscape 4.x) and you want to do an internet search, you
don't need to first open a search engine. Instead you
can simply type in the key words you are searching for,
and your browser will automatically open a search engine
for you and commence the search.

Type the words identifying your search objective into
the "Netsite" (Netscape) or "Location" (IE) box at the
top of your browser.

You can even perform what's known as a Boolean search.
Boolean searches include helpful terms like "and" and
"or." For example: "Laurel and Hardy" or "Laurel or
Hardy."

[3] THIS WEEK'S INTERNET TIP: Free LD on the Internet
----------------------------------------------------------

I've seen an annoying commercial several times on TV in
which Microsoft touts its MSN service by showing two
teens talking to one another long distance via a computer
after one of them has had her phone privileges taken away
by her parents.

You don't need MSN, and you don't even need to be a
spoiled teenager to perform this feat yourself. There are a number of free long distance options available to you
depending on the speed of your computer and the capability
of your sound card. Here are several:

Dialpad.com

Dialpad is browser-based so you don't need to download
any software. You will need to have Java enabled on your
browser. Sound quality: mediocre. Can only reach numbers
in the United States.

<http://www.dialpad.com>

PalTalk

PalTalk requires you to download a small program from
their web site. It also requires Windows 98, 95 or NT,
a sound card, a microphone and speakers. Some people get
good results with PalTalk, but the last time I tried it
I found the interface complex and the sound quality poor.
It may have improved since my last trial. With PalTalk,
though, you can call anywhere in the world. There is
also a nice conferencing feature that could be very
useful.

Net2Phone

Another service that requires you to download their
software and that is Windows-based, Net2Phone is
currently my favorite free long-distance option. If
your friends have Net2Phone on their computers, you
can call PC-to-PC anywhere in the world. You can call
free to any number in the US via PC-to-Phone. Sound
quality is good, if internet traffic is not too high.
Though it may take you a while to get used to the
time lags between when one person speaks and the
other party hears them.

Here are two more:

FireTalk is PC-to-PC based, but is an interesting
option for free tele-conferencing, if you can get
everyone in your group to subscribe.

[5] A Personal Recommendation: Just For You If You're New
----------------------------------------------------------

Are you new to computing and you'd like to know how to
make your PC do exactly what you want it to do? To stop it
acting like it has a mind of its own, and to have it just
let you get some things done for a change?

How would you like to use the internet without fear of
getting lost and confused? To confidently send email in
a flash, and even to build your own family or business
web pages?

And wouldn't you just love to be able to use those
super-duper programs without painfully struggling through
complicated help files, false starts and dead ends,
before giving up in frustration?

Now you really can. At last the mysteries of your PC and
the internet are explained for you and the magic is
revealed -- in plain English!

actually do the things you want to do with your computer
