If you're like me, you're eager to have a faster Internet
connection via cable modem, DSL, satellite or wireless
service.

Telecommunications and cable companies continue to roll
out service in different parts of the country, usually
starting with major cities and spreading to the suburbs.

Here's a web site you can visit to find out if your area
currently supports any of the above options:

http://www.getspeed.com

Just fill in the blanks with your zip code, street
address, area code and the first three digits of your
phone number and GetSpeed will tell you what deals are
available in your area and how much they cost.

[2] THIS WEEK'S COMPUTING TIP: Faster Dial-Up Networking

You may be taking longer than necessary to establish an
internet connection, if you use Dial-Up Networking. This
is because you may well have too many protocols listed
in DUN, and your computer takes time to run through
each one.

Open your DUN folder by double-clicking on the "My
Computer" icon, then double clicking "Dial-Up Networking." Right click on your internet connection and select the "Properties" item from the pop-up menu.

Select the "Server Types" tab and make sure that
"TCP/IP" is the only network protocol checked. Check with your internet service provider to make sure TCP/IP
is the only protocol you need for a connection. If you cleared the NetBEUI and IPX/SPX protocols, you'll
notice that the time it takes to establish your dial-up connection decreases.
