[1] THIS WEEK'S MONEY SAVER: FREE Spreadsheets and Calculators
--------------------------------------------------------

Want to know how much house you can afford? How to keep track of your GPA, your golf score, your kid's
batting average or your stock options?

Here's a web-based spreadsheet called BrainMatter
that can make these calculations a piece of cake:

Rather have a simple spreadsheet program on your own
computer for free? Spread32 doesn't have any of the bells
and whistles of the bloatware programs, but it's fast
simple to use and it has all the basic features most
people want. It has workbooks with 256 columns by
65536 rows by 255 worksheets and the usual arithmetic
operations along with more than 300 other functions, and
you can create formulas with more than 255 characters.

Here's where to get Spread32:

[2] THIS WEEK'S COMPUTING TIP: Automated Shut Down
----------------------------------------------------------

How many times have you been up late at night
downloading programs, wanting to get to bed but needing
to stay up to complete the download and close down your internet connection?

Here's a nifty program that allows you to set a timer to
shut down your computer at a pre-arranged time. You
can also use it as a one-button shut down utility.

The author, James Joyce (not THE author James Joyce),
merely asks that you send a postcard to him at his
address in Australia and he'll e-mail you the registration
code to disable a short delay on the program's splash
screen.

The program is fully functional while you're waiting for
your code to arrive. Very neat.

[5] A Personal Recommendation: A Fast $5 For You
----------------------------------------------------------

In previous issues I've touted PayPal, a free online
service that allows individuals or small businesses like
mine to accept and make payments over the internet
without a credit card merchant account and the exorbitant
fees that they charge. PayPal is particularly popular for
online auctions. Neither the buyer nor the seller pays a fee,
and one doesn't need to disclose one's credit card
information to strangers.

PayPal makes its money from the float - the time that
funds remain in their account before being transferred to
your bank account. They're reliable, and they're soon going
to be international. (PayPal is funded by a variety of
companies, with a significant portion of the money coming
from outside the U.S.: Nokia (Finland), Deutsche Banc
(Germany), Singapore Telecom, The Development Bank of
Singapore, and Vertex (also in Singapore).)

And they'll give YOU $5 right now just for opening an
account.

Even if you're not doing online auctions, take a look at
PayPal anyway. It's a very useful system, allowing you
to e-mail money to people. And not only is setting up an
account free, they'll actually put the first $5 into your
account. If you refer someone else who signs up for an
account, you'll get another $5, and so will they.

Get your first $5 by going here and signing up:

Here's an interesting thought about PayPal: Finally,
micropayments are possible. With PayPal you can charge $1,
50 cents, 10 cents, even one cent for a transaction. With
credit card processing this just isn't possible, as the
fees charged by the credit-card network may actually be
more than the transaction. For instance, a 30 cent
transaction could easily cost 31 cents in transaction fees
(and possibly several times that amount if there's some
kind of problem with the processing).
