[2] THIS WEEK'S COMPUTING TIP: One-click Shut Down
----------------------------------------------------------

Tired of the four-step process you must endure to shut
down your Windows-based PC? (Hit "Start" button,
select "Shut Down," select "Shut Down" again, hit "OK.") You can create a desktop shortcut that will shut your computer down with only one step. Here's how:

Right-click the desktop and select "New," then "Shortcut."
In the Command Line text box, type (or copy and paste):

rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows

Click "Next," and fill in a name for the shortcut, such
as "Shut Down," then click "Finish." To shut down in a
hurry, all you need to do from now on is to double click
your new shortcut.

Next week I'll tell you how to create a shortcut that
will restart your computer with only one click.

[3] THIS WEEK'S INTERNET TIP: Maximum Connection Speed

There are lots of factors that influence the speed at
which you can connect to the Internet: type of connection,
noise on the line, speed of your modem and so on.

If you're using a 56K modem (or slower) or an ISDN modem, here's how to make sure that it's running at the highest speed of which it's capable:

The easiest way to do this is to edit the WIN.INI file.
Use the Windows "Find" utility by hitting your "Start"
button and then "Find." When you locate WIN.INI, open
it in any text editor by double-clicking on it. (You may
need to designate which program you want to open "INI"
files. Select your favorite word processor when asked
which program you want.)

Use your "Find" command to locate the [Ports] section
in the WIN.INI document. There you'll see COM entries
1-4. Copy these settings down somewhere so that you
can restore them if you need to get them back.

Change each value to: "921600,n,8,1,p" (without the
quotes). Then restart your computer. Now open the Windows control panel and select "Modems." Press the
"Properties" button. Under the "Maximum speed" section,
choose the highest available setting. You've now
configured your modem to run at its highest available
speed, depending on line quality.
