[1] THIS WEEK'S MONEY SAVER: FREE Internet
-----------------------------------------------------------
Free internet connections are becoming more and more
common. Although several of the providers have recently
gone belly-up in the tech rout of 2001, you can still do a
search at any of the search engines for "free internet
service" and you'll see what I mean.
However, many of us live outside the major population
areas these free services cater to. But even that is changing.
I live in rural southwestern Oregon and at least two of
these services have reached my area:
Altavista:
<http://microav.com/>
Altavista.com has a free service subsidized by advertising
at the top of your screen. A timing program in the software
disconnects you unless you click an ad once in a while.
Freei.Net:
<http://go.freei.net/www/download.asp>
Freei.Net seems to have modeled itself after AOL. So
AOL users will probably feel quite comfortable with it.
Features include web browsing, email, a chat utility, news,
sports, and weather. Freei.Net is supported by advertising.
If you already have an internet service provider, these free
services are still a good idea as possible alternatives for
the occasional outage or slowdown at your main provider.

[2] THIS WEEK'S COMPUTING TIP: Change File
Names
-----------------------------------------------------------
How To Rename Files Quickly
You can rename any file in Windows 98 by single-clicking
the filename twice. The first time selects the file and the
second time opens the "rename" box. Then, you type the
new filename over the old one.
However, accessing the "rename" box with two single-
clicks usually results in unintentionally double-clicking the
file instead. Here's a much better and faster way Simply
select the file with a single click and then press [F2].
Doing this will open the "rename" box without mishap.

[3] THIS WEEK'S INTERNET TIP: List Management
-----------------------------------------------------------
E-mail List Creation and Management
<http://www.topica.com>
Topica offers
free e-mail list creation and management
tools, so you can start your newsletter or discussion list at
no charge. Note: E-mails sent through Topica
have third
party advertisements at the bottom and also contain
Topica messages.
Topica also
includes references to
thousands of existing lists.
The real value of the Topica
service is the time it will save
you in dealing with subscribes and unsubscribes to your
newsletter and the ability to reach all of your subscribers
by sending just one message from the internet.
