[1] THIS WEEK'S MONEY SAVER: Avoid Biz Op
Fraud
--------------------------------------------------------
What You Don't Know About Biz Op Fraud Can Hurt
You -- And Your Wallet!
The internet can be a wonderful place to shop, but just
as in a real world marketplace, con artists and scam
mongers are lurking and looking to separate you from
your hard-earned money.
The Federal Trade Commission has posted a web site
to help potential investors learn to spot business
opportunity fraud before they get burned.
It's not so hard to see why consumers are drawn to
ads for business opportunities claiming that you can
"be your own boss," "set your own hours," "work
from home," and "earn money quickly." But the
Federal Trade Commission points out that business
opportunity promotions like these often use the
language of legitimate business offers to promote
scams, taking consumers' money up front but
failing to deliver on their promises in the end.
The FTC offers sample sites, recourse for victims,
and tips about how to spot a scam. They also have
links to anti-fraud agencies in the 50 U.S. states.
