Two Excellent Free Image Editing Programs

There ARE lots of image editing programs available.
But most people can't justify the cost of the better ones. Here are two excellent alternatives that won't cost you anything.

IrfanView is superb for viewing graphics and converting formats. It supports thumbnails, TWAIN scanning, and drag and drop operations. It consists of a singe EXE file,
no nag screens and many usable options including
several very useful plugins. My favorite plugin allows me
to view any graphic file on my computer or any floppy
drive in a large enough version to actually be able to tell,
for example, if that small GIF is the one I want for my
web page.

Here's the IrfanView Home Page:

Our second image editor, GIMP's claim to fame is that it
is available on more than one platform. It was originally developed to operate on systems running Linux and
UNIX, but is now usable in the Windows environment.
It features truly outstanding screen setups for image
editing.

By the way, GIMP stands for "GNU Image
Manipulation Program." And GNU stands for "GNU's
Not UNIX," a reference to the GNU project, started in 1984 to develop a complete free UNIX-like operating
system.

Here's where you can find GIMP:

[2] THIS WEEK'S COMPUTING TIP: Task Bar Time
Saver
---------------------------------------------------------

Save Time Manipulating Multiple Programs

If you want to select multiple programs on the Windows taskbar (to close them all at once, maximize them, etc.), simply depress the"CTRL" key while you left-click each button. When you're finished,right-click on one of your taskbar applications and your desired action will be
applied to every chosen program. You can also reverse
an accidental selection by clicking on a selected item.

[3] THIS WEEK'S INTERNET TIP: Improve Your
Web Ranking
---------------------------------------------------------

Two Ways to Get Higher Search Engine Rankings

Everyone wants their web site to rank near the top in the search engines. After all, they're a virtually free source of advertising and a great way to increase traffic to your
web site. Here are two simple ways to improve your
site's ranking: One of the factors in results ranking, as implemented by major search engines, is frequency,
which is computed as the number of keyword
occurrences divided by the document size.

If two documents contain the same keyword (located at
the same distance from the top of document), the one
that is smaller in size will get a higher ranking. So, keep
the size of your opening page modest if you can.

Second, you can find popular synonyms for each
keyword that you use. Go to Excite.com and type in
your keywords. Notice the checkboxes for "Select
words to add to your search.."? Take advantage of
Excite's extensive vocabulary research. Write down the
most suitable synonyms and related words from the list
they display and add them to your meta tags. You are
now virtually cherry picking pre-selected keywords
which are highly likely to be chosen by web surfers as
they conduct their search engine research.
