Improving Your Tech Support Results
This week's tip is for both MAC and PC users.
Here are some pointers for improving your results when
you need tech support for programs or hardware.
First, don't call on Monday mornings. Surveys say this
is the busiest time for technical support phone centers.
Next, listen carefully to the "average holding time" that
some phone centers announce. If the current average
hold time is 20 minutes or longer, consider hanging up
and trying again at a later time unless you have a critical
situation.
Finally, don't hang up once you do reach a human being.
Most phone centers classify "throughput" (the number of
calls answered in a given time) differently from
"closings" (calling back those people who require
additional assistance). The support staffer you are
dealing with may or may not be good at closing problems.
If you remain on the line until he or she resolves your
problem, the burden is on the tech staffer to resolve your
situation as quickly as possible.
